Two Brains, One Smart Home: Why I Run Apple Home and Home Assistant Side by Side

When I started building my smart home, everyone told me the same thing: pick a platform and stick with it. Apple Home if you want simple, Home Assistant if you want power. Choosing both, the internet warned, was a recipe for confusion.

I ignored that advice. From day one I’ve run Apple Home and Home Assistant in parallel, and honestly? It’s the single best decision I’ve made in this whole hobby. Let me walk you through my setup, why it works, and what I’d tell anyone standing at the same fork in the road.

The Foundation Nobody Talks About: The Network

Before a single bulb or sensor, I want to give credit to the unsung hero of my smart home: UniFi. The whole thing runs on a UniFi backbone, and I can’t overstate how much grief that has saved me.

A smart home is really just a few dozen tiny computers having constant conversations, and if the network underneath them is flaky, nothing else matters. With UniFi I get solid Wi-Fi coverage in every corner of the house, a dedicated VLAN for IoT devices so my cheap gadgets can’t snoop on my laptop, and visibility into exactly what every device is doing. When something misbehaves, I can see it. If you’re starting from scratch, fix your network first. Everything else gets easier.

My Stack: A Brand for Every Job

I didn’t set out to collect ecosystems, but I ended up choosing the best tool for each job rather than forcing one brand everywhere:

  • Philips Hue for lighting — still the gold standard for reliability and color quality, and the Hue Bridge plays nicely with everything.
  • Lutron Caséta for switches — in my experience, Lutron’s Clear Connect radio simply never fails. My wall switches have to work every single time, and they do.
  • Abode for security — a proper security system with professional monitoring options, but one that doesn’t lock me out of my own data.
  • Aqara for most of my sensors and door locks — shockingly good hardware for the price. Motion, contact, temperature, vibration… I’ve scattered them everywhere.
  • Eve for smart outlets — Thread-based, local, no cloud account required. Exactly how I like it.
  • Flair for smart vents, working alongside my Carrier air conditioning — this combo lets me do room-by-room climate control instead of fighting over one thermostat.

On paper that’s seven brands. In practice, it all feels like one system — and that’s entirely because of the two-brain approach.

How the Two Brains Divide the Work

Apple Home is the face of the house. It’s what my family actually touches. Siri on the HomePods, the Home app on everyone’s iPhone, scenes like “Good Night” that anyone can trigger without thinking. The Hue lights, Lutron switches, and Eve outlets all show up natively, and Apple’s presence detection — knowing when the first person arrives or the last person leaves — is the most reliable I’ve ever used.

Home Assistant is the brain stem. It’s where everything connects, regardless of brand or protocol. Abode, Flair, the Carrier system, every Aqara sensor — Home Assistant speaks to all of them, even the ones Apple has never heard of. And through the HomeKit Bridge integration, it pushes the useful ones into Apple Home, so my family can ask Siri about devices that technically have no HomeKit support at all.

The simple stuff lives in Apple Home: arrival scenes, voice control, the lighting moods. The clever stuff lives in Home Assistant: the automation that adjusts Flair vents based on which rooms are occupied, the notification when an Aqara sensor says a door’s been left open while Abode is armed, the climate logic that coordinates the Carrier system with actual room temperatures instead of one hallway thermostat.

My one iron rule: every automation lives in exactly one system. The moment two platforms both think they’re in charge of a light, your house starts feeling haunted. Ask me how I know.

What This Setup Gets Me

The honest answer is: the best of both worlds, with surprisingly little friction.

My family gets an Apple-simple experience. Nobody in my house needs to know what an MQTT broker is. Guests can use the lights. Siri works.

Meanwhile, I get total freedom in what I buy. When I found out Aqara sensors cost a fraction of the “premium” alternatives, I didn’t have to check a compatibility list — if Home Assistant supports it (and it supports nearly everything), it’s in. The bridge takes care of the rest.

And critically, almost everything runs locally. Lutron, Hue, Eve, Aqara — none of it depends on someone’s cloud server staying online. The internet can go down and my house keeps working.

What’s Next

The roadmap keeps growing, which I’m told is a symptom and not a phase. Up next for me:

  • Irrigation control, so the garden waters itself based on actual weather instead of a dumb timer
  • A garage door opener that tells me when I’ve left it open — and closes it
  • A water shutoff valve, paired with leak sensors, because one burst pipe pays for the entire smart home several times over

Every one of these will follow the same pattern: integrate it into Home Assistant first, expose the family-facing controls to Apple Home, and write the smart logic where the power is.

The Verdict

Running two platforms in parallel isn’t a compromise and it isn’t complicated — it’s a division of labor. Apple Home is the storefront: polished, simple, family-proof. Home Assistant is the engine room: powerful, flexible, and happy to absorb whatever oddball device I drag home next. And underneath it all, a UniFi network quietly makes the whole thing possible.
